Apple's fall 2026 lineup is its most unusual in years. On September 9, 2026, Apple announced the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, which went on sale September 18, alongside iPhone Duo, the first foldable iPhone, which arrived in stores on October 23. Notably, there was no standard iPhone 18 this fall. That makes these three models the newest iPhones you can actually buy today.

This overview explains what changed on each model, what the changes mean for everyday protection, and where to find cases that fit. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max: What's New

A camera with real variable aperture

The headline upgrade is the new 48MP Fusion Main camera with variable aperture, a first for iPhone. Six laser-cut blades move between four settings (f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8 and f/4.0), so the camera can open up for low light or close down to keep a whole group in focus. A new Pro controls panel in the Camera app adds manual shutter speed, white balance, aperture and a live histogram. Apple also introduced Apple Reference Image, an opt-in mode that captures signed sensor data so you can later check whether a photo was edited.

A20 Pro and a bigger vapor chamber

Both Pro models run the A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process, with a 6-core CPU, a 7-core GPU and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. Apple says the redesigned vapor chamber has three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro's and enables up to 40 percent better sustained performance.

Longer battery life and faster charging

Apple rates iPhone 18 Pro for up to 24 hours of typical use and iPhone 18 Pro Max for up to 30 hours, which Apple calls the largest battery-life increase ever on iPhone. iPhone 18 Pro can reach 50 percent in around 15 minutes with a 60W-capable adapter, or in 30 minutes on a MagSafe charger. Both models support MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W.

A smaller Dynamic Island and refreshed colors

The Dynamic Island is smaller and can now show up to three Live Activities at once. Screen sizes stay at 6.3 and 6.9 inches, and the finishes are Black, Silver, Glacier and an all-new Burgundy. The overall look is close to last year's models, so always buy a case listed for your exact model rather than assuming an older iPhone 17 Pro case will fit.

iPhone Duo: Apple's First Foldable

iPhone Duo opens like a book. Closed, it is roughly passport-sized with a 5.4-inch outer display; open, it reveals a 7.6-inch inner display that Apple says is 50 percent larger than iPhone 18 Pro Max. At 5.2 mm thick when open, Apple calls it the thinnest iPhone ever.

  • Built for folding: a grade 5 titanium enclosure, a hinge made from more than 100 components, Ceramic Shield 2 on the outer display and an IP68 rating.
  • Inner screen care: the folding display uses a nano-texture cover layer with a scratch-resistant coating, which reduces glare and helps hide the crease.
  • Touch ID returns: authentication moves to the side button so unlocking works the same whether the phone is open or closed.
  • Multitasking: Split View lets you run two apps side by side on iPhone for the first time, and Apple Pencil (USB-C) support is coming later this year.
  • Cameras: a 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide, plus folding-only tricks like previewing a shot for your subject on the outer screen.

What the Changes Mean for Protection

The Pro camera plateau is still the high point. Three large lenses sit in a raised module, so a case with a lip that rises above the lenses, or a separate lens protector, matters. See our screen and camera lens protection guide for options.

The Duo hinge is a new weak spot. A foldable needs a case that covers both halves and ideally the spine. Hinge-covering designs like the Hinge-Armor Frosted MagSafe Folding Kickstand Case are built specifically for that.

MagSafe is everywhere. All three models support 25W MagSafe and Qi2 charging, so a case with built-in magnets keeps chargers, wallets and mounts working. Browse iPhone MagSafe Cases or read our new iPhone setup and MagSafe tips.

What About the Standard iPhone 18?

Apple did not announce a standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e or a second-generation iPhone Air in September, and has not given a date for them. Outlets including 9to5Mac and CNBC have reported that those models are expected in the first half of 2027, but Apple has not confirmed this. Until then, the iPhone 17, iPhone 17e and iPhone Air remain Apple's non-Pro options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the newest iPhone right now?

iPhone Duo is the most recent release, available from October 23, 2026. iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max launched a month earlier, on September 18, 2026.

Are iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max bigger than last year's models?

No. Apple kept the 6.3-inch and 6.9-inch screen sizes. The main differences are inside: A20 Pro, the variable-aperture camera and bigger batteries.

Does iPhone Duo work with MagSafe?

Yes. Apple lists MagSafe and Qi2 wireless charging at up to 25W, so MagSafe-compatible Duo cases keep that feature working.

Do I need a special case for iPhone Duo?

Yes. Its folding design needs a case made for iPhone Duo. Shop the full iPhone Duo Cases collection or compare styles in our iPhone Duo case guide.
